I am writing from Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, where I have been blessed to serve as a camp grandma for one week this summer through my role as Minister of Congregational Service. This summer’s theme is

Hands Wide Open at Rainbow Trail

Each summer, my role as Minister of Congregational Service gives me the opportunity to spend one week serving as a camp grandma at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. This year’s theme, “Hands Wide Open,” is rooted in Philippians 4:4-7 and its invitation to rejoice, release our worries through prayer, and receive God’s peace.

Throughout the week, campers explored what it means to be present with God and one another. We talked honestly about anxiety, practiced gratitude, and learned to move from the closed fists of worry to cupped hands and, finally, open hands of prayer.

One morning, we gathered on the ball field at 5:10 a.m. for sunrise worship. We were tired, but after a few stand-up songs and as the sky filled with color, we were ready to reflect on prayer and the importance of making time to be with God.

Each morning, a counselor shared a personal testimony. I was touched by their vulnerability and willingness to speak about their doubts, struggles, and the ways God has walked with them through seasons of change. Their honesty resonated deeply with the high school campers and reminded them that they are not alone.

Our final Bible study focused on peace and what it means to live as beloved children of God. Campers were encouraged to carry that connection home and continue living with open hands.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be present with these campers and counselors. I had the joy of sharing my love of knitting, but even more importantly, I had the honor of listening, praying, and learning alongside them. This week reminded me that God meets us in our anxiety, receives our prayers, and invites us to live with hands wide open.
