Sunday School

First Lutheran’s Children and Youth Ministry strives to creatively guide our children and youth to…

  • Know Jesus as their Lord. To be confident in themselves and their faith.
  • Feel welcome and accepted. To experience a safe place to doubt and ask questions.
  • Share their passions through service both in worship and out in their community.
  • Be active participants in their faith and claim their identity as lifelong believers.
  • Experience joy and celebration with their community.

Here at First, we seek to walk alongside families as they grow in their faith together.
We do this intentionally through our Milestone Ministries.

Our youngest members, age 0-5, are welcome in our Nursery during all four of our Sunday Services and during our 7 p.m. Wednesday Night LIGHT service. We have background checked nursery attendants that will make sure that your child is cared for while you worship.

Sunday School, 9:30-10:15 a.m.

PreK thru 5th grade

Sunday School has an intentional curriculum to teach every grade of students a full comprehension of the Bible each year. This is also where we intentionally wrap in the faith formation milestones of learning the Lord’s Prayer, Books of the Bible, Apostle’s Creed, and 10 Commandments. We have a dedicated staff of teachers who make a year-long commitment, offering consistency for the students. Our teachers are carefully screened and background checked.  We meet in the Fellowship Hall downstairs every Sunday. You are welcome to drop-off starting at 9:15 a.m. Children are brought back into worship with their families or to sit with their class in the first two left pews at around 10:15 a.m. right before communion.

Sunday school always takes a break the Sunday before and after Christmas, the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend and the Sunday after, and the Sunday before and of Labor Day weekend.

First Kids, 10:15-11:15 a.m.

PreK thru 2nd Grade

The First Kids space across from the Worship Center opens at 10:15 a.m. and is available for use, though we encourage families to begin worship together. Before the message, parents can bring children to the Fireside Room for an interactive lesson on the preaching text for the day. If you’d like your child to stay until the end of worship instead of returning for communion and closing songs, just let the teacher know.

The childcare center on the main floor is also available for the entire service for children aged three and under.

Regular Sunday Morning Schedule

  • 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. – Sunday School for Preschool – 5th Grade in the Fellowship Hall
    • Children will return to their families at the Announcements to finish worship together.
  • 10:15 – 11:15 a.m. – First Kids for Preschool – 2nd Grade in the Fireside Room across from the Worship Center
    • Children are invited to join worship with their parents at communion, but can stay for the entire contemporary worship time.

Milestone Ministries

Each year we welcome our newest preschoolers (age 3) to join the Little Lambs class for Sunday School! The little lambs and their parents are welcomed in church by the congregation, the pastor, and their teachers, given a blessing and a little lamb and then head off to their first Sunday School class.

Our Kindergarteners and first graders are learning in Sunday School that they are created in the image of God and that they are image bearers of that awesome and amazing God out in the world. We recognize this publicly with a self-portrait gallery on display in the Gathering Place from January through August.

Our second graders are learning The Lord’s Prayer in Sunday School each week. They will lead the congregation in this prayer at the 9:30 a.m. service on February 8th.

First Communion instruction happens in the Spring of third grade for our youth. Part of the 3rd grade Sunday school curriculum includes instruction on Passover and the Last Supper, which provides the background for further instruction with our faith formation leadership and parents. Some youth might feel moved to begin receiving communion prior to 3rd grade and that is perfectly acceptable. We welcome all to the table! If you have a child that is older than third grade that would like to take First Communion, please email Pastor Michaela for more information.

At the beginning of each year, we recognize our 4th graders as they are beginning to grow more in their faith and relationship with God. The fourth graders are not just given their first student bibles, they are also learning the books of the Bible and learning about the different genres and audiences of the Bible throughout their fourth grade Sunday school year.

Our fifth graders are learning The Apostle’s Creed and Ten Commandments in Sunday School. They will lead the congregation in The Apostle’s Creed at the 9:30 a.m. service on April 26th.

The entire Sunday School sings twice a year a the 9:30 a.m. service on Palm Sunday and Mother’s Day. We also welcome children to join the Rainbow Ringers, a bell choir specifically for grades 2-5. We also can always use child actors for our annual Gallery of Living Art. Please visit our our Gallery of Living Art page and our music page to learn about bell choir opportunities.
